We dog lovers generally find it annoying when our dogs beg, and most of us would like to know how to stop them from doing so. So let us first look at why they display this behavior in the first place.

Why do dogs beg? Well, what we need to understand about our dogs first is their way of thinking. Dogs are quite intelligent animals, but they do think differently than humans do. For dogs there are only two things: It feels good, and it feels bad.

And here is how this relates to begging: If your dog begged for food once, maybe sitting next to you when you were eating, and you gave him some, he will think that felt “good.”

He will remember that his begging led to getting the food he begged for, for example, and that is a pleasant experience. Consequently, he will want to repeat it, and who can blame him, really?

So, what does that mean for us? We absolutely need to be consistent when it comes to begging. Under no circumstances should we give in and give him what he is begging for.

Giving in to him would be like rewarding him, which, in turn, would make him think it is a good idea to beg again.

I know being consistent can be difficult, but it is absolutely paramount. You must never make an exception! For example, let us say it is his birthday, so you want to do something really nice for him.

And he comes up to you and looks at you with those huge, adorable eyes, and he begs. You might think “Here you go, sweetie, it’s your birthday!”

All I can say is: DON’T do that. Dogs will not understand exceptions of any kind. You might know it is his birthday, but he does not. All he will know is that begging is acceptable and will -sometimes- get him what he wants. Be consistent, otherwise he will only be confused.
